The nature of our training

Our academic rigour is appreciate by our students, tutors and lecturers.

  • Our students must demonstrate their technical knowledge of the mechanisms for each contributing factor they address; this makes the study demanding, but enjoyable, as thorough understanding of the topics is vital for the increasingly more demanding and nutritionally educated public.
  • We believe in evidence-based practice and our students are trained in research methods from the start of the course.
  • We also incorporate the latest research into our course materials BCNH teaching methods include traditional lectures, small group clinical seminars, formative workbooks (not compulsory and not assessed) and one-to-one tutorial support via telephone, Skype or in person.
  • Our students are taught clinical skills from the beginning of the course to ensure confidence and competence by the time they qualify. In Year 1, 2 and 3 students learn how to apply theory into practice during the clinical seminars where up to 4 college-set case studies are analysed and their contributing factors and mechanisms identified.
  • Nutritional recommendations, including biochemical and functional tests are also discussed. Experienced and friendly lecturers and practitioners train BCNH students to achieve their highest potential.

Nick Nick Miller

Nick completed his MSc at Trinity College, Dublin and his PhD at the University of London. His first hospital job was in 1970 in Guy’s Hospital, where he developed an interest in endocrinology. This lead to various other hospital assignments and he became a “general” clinical chemist. Looking out of his laboratory window one day he realised that a) many of the passers-by had symptoms of nutritional deficiencies and b) there was no current interest in appropriate scientific investigation of nutritional problems which were clearly quite common in the general population. The thought that such deficiencies must impinge on both diagnosis and treatment gave him an interest in nutritional medicine and he started developing methods for evaluation of nutritional micronutrients. Nick later moved into the field of free radical biochemistry and became a Senior Lecturer in the Biochemistry Department of the-then Guy’s Hospital Medical School. Nick worked with Professor Tony Diplock (the leading authority on vitamin E) on a number of projects, including the Whitehall Survey of Civil Servants. Most of Nick’s publications in the medical literature (around 100 papers and presentations) concern the role of free radicals and antioxidants in diet and in disease. Nick has been with Biolab, a medical referral laboratory specialising in nutritional and environmental medicine, for the past twelve years.

clive Clive Vratten

Clive has been in the travel & aviation industry for over 25 years, occupying various roles in sales, marketing and general management. He currently looks after the UK business for a major Middle Eastern airline. For many years Clive had little knowledge of nutrition, but that all changed when he met his wife who is a BCNH qualified Nutritional Therapist. As his daily diet was modified to include fresh whole foods cooked from scratch and ALWAYS containing at least 5 portions of vegetables, he noticed that he slept more deeply and felt that his body simply functioned and worked a whole lot better. He now knows that it was good nutrition that he has to thank for feeling so much better and as a result he found himself searching for more knowledge on the subject. The opportunity to become involved with BCNH offered him the chance to make nutrition more available and understandable to the average person in the street. Clive is passionate about making the principles of nutrition less frightening and more acceptable and he is delighted to be assisting BCNH in this objective.
