BCNH Courses

Why Study Nutrition?

The exciting topic of nutrition is now very much in demand as it becomes more and more apparent that the average Western diet is nutrient deficient.

Studying nutrition is a complex process. Nutrition topics we teach at BCNH are based on medical science, combined with a holistic approach, which makes learning interesting and fascinating. Our students are informed of the latest research and findings, in addition to being taught the mechanisms behind the theory.

BCNH Lectures & Seminars

BCNH lectures take place 1- 2 weekends a month; Saturdays and Sundays (10am – 5pm) at University College London (UCL) in the centre of London where BCNH hire premises.

Distance Learning students and students missing a seminar are required to complete ONE seminar case study  as a ‘homework’, to achieve the same level of clinical training as attending students.

Our lectures are well structured, comprehensive and informative. We teach cutting edge information on the latest published research and we encourage students to participate in the classroom questions and answers sessions.

Most module consist of a theory seminar and a clinical seminar. During theory seminars, key elements of each module are discussed and debated, promoting further understanding of the lecture material.

During clinical seminars, students apply their knowledge by analyzing BCNH-set case studies. Starting in Year 1, students learn how to apply theory into practice during the clinical seminars where  BCNH-set case studies are analyzed and their contributing factors and mechanisms identified. Nutritional recommendations, including biochemical and functional tests are also discussed.

E-learning

At BCN we use technology to complement and enhance teaching and learning. All our students have access to our integrative learning website Moodle, the world’s most popular e-learning platform. Moodle allows students access class materials (lecture notes, video clips, etc) as well as communication with fellow students and tutors, which enable all students and the entire faculty to form one large community. Students can also submit their assignments online. This easy to use facility is hugely popular with students and particularly benefits long distance learners.

Student Support & Guidance

At BCNH we appreciate that embarking on a degree-level study is exciting and challenging for most students. However, you do not need to worry; we provide subject specific tutors, personal tutors, as well as student mentors who will support you and help you achieve your potential. Your personal tutor will stay with you throughout the duration of your study and be available for your support when you need it. There is also a Programme Leader overseeing academic issues as well as providing support.

Distance Learning (DL) & Overseas (OS) Students

Those students who cannot attend lectures and seminars in central London, can study by DL. We also welcome overseas students; several overseas students have already studied with BCNH and we have graduates practicing in countries such as Greece, Malta, Dubai, South Africa, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, etc.

DL students are required to attend 4 weekends throughout their studies:

1. One orientation day in Year 1
2. One clinical weekend in Year 3
3. Two clinical weekends in Year 4

Financial Assistance

‘Professional and Career Development Loans are commercial bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Government will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. You will then need to start repaying the loan as you would any other commercial loans product. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries.

As the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, you should make sure you have investigated all the funding options that may be open to you to ensure you take an informed decision about whether the Loan is right for you. For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact Next Step on 0800 100 900’.

Following successful completion of a BCNH Diploma students may apply to join the BSc Hons Complementary Therapies Nutritional Health programme at University of Greenwich and transfer relevant credits gained from their studies as Associate Students, into the programme.
